What the Index Shows

Distance is not the main driver of price. Competition is. Routes where several airlines fight for the same passengers — the North Atlantic, the Gulf, South Africa — are priced well below what their flight time would suggest. That is why the cheapest US gateway, Atlanta at £2,350, costs less than many shorter routes, and why a flat bed to South Africa (from Johannesburg at £2,315) is one of the best-value long-haul tickets the UK has.

The premium-economy gap is the real decision. At around 1.5× the premium economy fare, business class is a significant step up. On routes over about ten hours, most travellers find the flat bed worth it; on shorter long-haul hops, premium economy is often the better value.

First class is a different product, not a bigger seat. At around 2.2× the business fare, it is priced for travellers buying privacy and service rather than a better bed, which most modern business cabins already provide.

Methodology

Each figure is the lowest return fare per person that Travel Business First holds for that destination across five UK departure airports (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcastle), taken from our private and consolidator fare data in October 2026. These are guide prices, not live fares: availability and prices change daily, and the fare for your dates will be confirmed on quotation.

Regions group destinations by where they are, not by airline routing. Country hub pages are excluded so no fare is counted twice. Averages are simple means of each destination’s lowest fare, not of fares actually paid. The index is updated quarterly; earlier editions will remain available for comparison.
