The Garuda Indonesia Experience, some of the warmest cabin service in aviation, and the most direct way to reach Bali and the Indonesian archipelago. Garuda's business class is a specialist choice — and understanding the routing from Britain matters more than the seat.
Quick answer
Garuda business class is a 1-2-1 layout on the 777-300ER and a 2-2-2 layout on the A330, so aisle access is not guaranteed on every aircraft. There is no closing door. Garuda is a SkyTeam member, so Avios do not work but Virgin Points do. There is no direct UK flight — you connect via a Gulf or Asian hub, or fly a competitor throughout. Its strengths are service warmth and Indonesian domestic reach. Expect £2,400–£3,800 return from the UK.
About Garuda Indonesia
Garuda Indonesia was founded in 1949 and is the national carrier of Indonesia, based at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta. It is named after the mythological bird of Hindu and Buddhist tradition that appears on Indonesia's national emblem.
The airline went through a difficult period through the 2000s, including a spell on the EU's restricted list, but a comprehensive safety and service overhaul from around 2007 changed its trajectory. It was removed from the EU list in 2009 and subsequently earned a five-star rating and repeated recognition for its cabin crew — an award it won for several consecutive years.
More recently the airline has restructured its finances and rationalised its fleet and network, which is why UK connectivity is now less direct than it once was.
Garuda joined SkyTeam in 2014, alongside Delta, KLM, Air France, Korean Air and Virgin Atlantic.

Getting to Indonesia from the UK
This matters more than the seat, so it comes first.
Garuda does not currently operate a direct UK service. Reaching Bali or Jakarta from Britain means one of the following:
| Routing | How it works |
|---|---|
| Via a Gulf hub | Qatar, Emirates or Etihad to Jakarta or Bali. Usually the simplest and often the cheapest. No Garuda involvement. |
| Via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur | Singapore Airlines or Malaysia, then a short hop. Malaysia is often the lowest total fare. |
| Via Amsterdam | KLM to Jakarta. Same SkyTeam family, useful from UK regional airports. |
| Onto Garuda metal | Connect to a Garuda service in Asia, or use Garuda for domestic legs within Indonesia. |
The practical advice: most UK travellers reach Indonesia on a Gulf or Asian carrier and use Garuda for the domestic network once there — Jakarta to Bali, Yogyakarta, Lombok, Labuan Bajo. That is where Garuda genuinely earns its place, and it is worth booking on one ticket so your baggage checks through.
The Business Class Seat
777-300ER: the good one
Garuda's 777-300ER carries a 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access for every passenger and a fully flat bed. It is a competent modern business class — comparable to United Polaris or KLM's 787 in hardware terms.
A330: the one to check
The A330 fleet uses a 2-2-2 layout. The bed is flat, but window passengers must step past a neighbour to reach the aisle. This is the same limitation as BA's old Club World and Malaysia's A330.
Because the A330 operates many regional and some longer sectors, checking your aircraft is essential. If you are travelling as a couple the 2-2-2 is largely a non-issue; travelling solo it is a meaningful downgrade.
No door, modest storage
Garuda does not fit a privacy door to any business seat. Storage is a side console and a literature pocket — modest by current standards. On hardware, Garuda sits in the lower half of this guide, and it is worth saying so plainly.
Which Aircraft Has What
| Aircraft | Layout | Aisle access | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 777-300ER | 1-2-1 | All seats | Best — book this |
| A330-900neo | 2-2-2 | Not all | Flat bed, limited access |
| A330-300 | 2-2-2 | Not all | Flat bed, limited access |
| 737-800 | Regional business | n/a | Domestic legs, recliner |
Domestic Indonesian sectors — Jakarta to Bali, Yogyakarta, Lombok — are typically 737 or A330. On a short domestic hop a recliner is entirely reasonable; do not expect a flat bed.
Best Seats by Traveller Type
| You are | Book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, want quiet | 777 window, mid-cabin | Aisle access guaranteed on the 777 only |
| Couple | A330 window pair together | 2-2-2 access issue disappears |
| Solo on an A330 | Aisle seat | Avoids climbing over a stranger |
| Domestic Indonesian legs | Any business seat | Short sectors; recliner is fine |
| Anyone | Avoid rows beside galley | No door means noise carries |
The Garuda Indonesia Experience
Garuda's service concept is built around the five senses and Indonesian hospitality, and it is the airline's genuine strength — the thing that makes the hardware limitations easier to accept.
In practice this means cabin crew trained to an exceptionally high standard of warmth and attentiveness. The airline has won repeated international recognition specifically for its cabin staff, and passenger reports are consistent: the service is the reason to fly Garuda.
Elements include a distinctive Indonesian scent used in the cabin, traditional textile patterns in the interior design, Indonesian music, and crew presentation drawing on Indonesian dress. It is done with restraint rather than as theatre.
Where a Gulf carrier delivers polish and a Japanese carrier delivers precision, Garuda delivers genuine warmth. If that matters more to you than a closing door, the calculation changes.
Food and Drink
Indonesian cuisine is the strength and it is prepared properly — nasi goreng, rendang, satay, soto and gado-gado all appear, cooked to a standard that reflects the archipelago rather than a generic pan-Asian approximation.
Western options exist and are competent, but as with most Asian carriers the local menu is the better order.
Garuda is Indonesia's national carrier and Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-majority country, so all catering is halal. Alcohol is served on international routes; note that some domestic services within Indonesia do not serve it, which surprises passengers connecting internally.
Indonesian coffee is a genuine highlight — the country produces some of the world's best, and Garuda serves it properly.
There is no pre-order dining system and no dine-on-demand.
Amenities, Sleep and Service
Bedding is a mattress topper, duvet and pillow — adequate rather than exceptional. Amenity kits are well assembled with Indonesian design touches.
Service, as covered above, is the standout element and consistently outperforms the hardware.
Wi-Fi is paid on most aircraft, placing Garuda at the back of the field on connectivity alongside Virgin and United.
Jakarta, Bali and the Lounges
Garuda operates its Executive Lounge at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Terminal 3, which is the airline's modern home terminal and a considerable improvement on the older facilities. The lounge offers Indonesian hot food, a bar and shower suites, and is comfortable and well run.
At Bali Ngurah Rai there is a further Garuda lounge serving both domestic and international departures.
Neither competes with Cathay's Pier or Qatar's Al Mourjan, but both are pleasant and the Indonesian food offering is good.
Because there is no UK departure, your outbound lounge will belong to whichever carrier operates your first sector.
A practical note on Bali: Ngurah Rai gets extremely busy during peak season, and immigration queues on arrival can be long. Allow more time than you would expect, particularly on departure.
Baggage Allowance
| Checked baggage | 40kg total (weight concept) |
| Cabin baggage | 2 pieces, combined weight limit |
| Domestic sectors | Lower allowance — check separately |
| Surfboards | Carried — advance notice required |
Note that Indonesian domestic sectors often carry a lower baggage allowance than the international leg. If you are connecting internally, check the domestic allowance rather than assuming the international one carries through — this catches people out regularly, particularly with surfboards heading to Bali.
GarudaMiles, Virgin Points and SkyTeam
Garuda's programme is GarudaMiles, with tiers Silver, Gold and Platinum. Gold delivers SkyTeam Elite Plus.
For UK travellers:
- Avios do not work. Garuda is SkyTeam, not oneworld.
- Virgin Points do work. Virgin Atlantic is a SkyTeam partner, so Flying Club points can be redeemed on Garuda. Virgin Points transfer from Amex at 1:1.
- Flying Blue miles from the KLM and Air France programme can also book Garuda.
- Virgin Gold delivers SkyTeam Elite Plus, recognised for Garuda lounge access.
- GarudaMiles itself is of limited use from the UK unless you fly Indonesian domestic routes regularly.
Routes and the Indonesian Domestic Network
Garuda's international network from Jakarta covers Asia and the Middle East, with services to Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Jeddah.
The domestic network is where Garuda is genuinely indispensable. Indonesia spans over seventeen thousand islands and more than three thousand miles east to west. Reaching Bali, Yogyakarta, Lombok, Labuan Bajo for Komodo, Surabaya or Medan means flying, and Garuda serves them all with the country's most reliable full-service operation.
Booking your Indonesian domestic sectors on the same ticket as the international leg protects the connection and checks baggage through — worth doing even if a separate low-cost ticket looks cheaper.
Garuda vs the Alternatives to Bali
| Feature | Garuda | Qatar | Singapore | Malaysia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct from UK | No | Via Doha | Via Changi | Via KL |
| Closing door | No | Yes | No | A350 yes |
| Aisle access, all seats | 777 only | Yes | Not on 787-10 | A350 only |
| Service warmth | Outstanding | Polished | Precise | Warm |
| Avios | No | Yes | No | Yes |
| Virgin Points | Yes | No | No | No |
| Indonesian domestic | Best | Partner | Partner | Partner |
Short version: for the long haul from Britain, Qatar, Singapore or Malaysia will give you a better seat and a simpler booking. Garuda's value is service warmth and the Indonesian domestic network. The sensible pattern for most UK travellers is a Gulf or Asian carrier to Jakarta or Bali, with Garuda handling the island-hopping once you are there.
How to Book Garuda Indonesia
Bali's peak season is July, August and the Christmas–New Year period, when fares and hotel rates rise sharply and the island is at its busiest. The shoulder months of April to June and September to early November give better fares, thinner crowds and generally good weather.
The wet season runs roughly November to March. It is not a washout — rain tends to come in short heavy bursts — and fares are at their lowest.
Book 4 to 6 months ahead for peak dates. Ramadan and Eid affect Indonesian domestic demand significantly, so check the dates if you are travelling internally.
Two specific points. First, check whether your sectors are 777 or A330 — aisle access differs. Second, book domestic Indonesian legs on the same ticket as the international flight, and check the domestic baggage allowance separately.
As a consolidator we price all the realistic UK–Indonesia routings side by side, confirm aircraft types in writing, and build the domestic island-hopping into a single itinerary.

Prefer to talk? 0203 727 6360.
Does Garuda fly direct from the UK?
No. Garuda does not currently operate a direct UK service. Most UK travellers reach Indonesia on a Gulf carrier such as Qatar or Emirates, or via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Amsterdam, and then use Garuda for domestic sectors within Indonesia.
Is Garuda Indonesia business class good?
The service is outstanding — Garuda has won repeated international recognition for its cabin crew. The hardware is more modest: the 777-300ER is a good 1-2-1 flat bed, but the A330 is 2-2-2 without guaranteed aisle access, and no Garuda seat has a privacy door.
Does Garuda business class have a door?
No, on any aircraft. For a closing door on routes to Southeast Asia you need Qatar Qsuite or Malaysia Airlines' A350 Business Suite.
Can I use Avios on Garuda?
No. Garuda is a SkyTeam member. However, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points can be redeemed on Garuda because Virgin is a SkyTeam partner, and Virgin Points transfer from Amex Membership Rewards at 1:1.
What is the Garuda Indonesia Experience?
Garuda's service concept, built around Indonesian hospitality and the five senses — a distinctive cabin scent, traditional textile design, Indonesian music and food, and cabin crew trained to an exceptionally high standard of warmth.
Is Garuda Indonesia safe?
Garuda underwent a comprehensive safety overhaul from around 2007, was removed from the EU's restricted list in 2009, and subsequently earned a five-star rating and repeated service awards. It holds standard international safety certifications and is a full SkyTeam member.
What is the baggage allowance on domestic Indonesian flights?
Lower than the international allowance, so check it separately rather than assuming 40kg carries through. This catches people out regularly, particularly travellers bringing surfboards to Bali.
When is the best time to visit Bali?
April to June and September to early November offer the best combination of fare, weather and crowds. July, August and Christmas are peak. The wet season from November to March has the lowest fares.
How much is Garuda business class from the UK?
Typically 2,400 to 3,800 pounds return depending on routing and season, reflecting the connection required. A Gulf carrier or Malaysia Airlines direct to Bali is often cheaper and simpler for the long-haul portion.
