Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, a gel-cooled pillow, and the best US domestic connecting network of any carrier. United Polaris is the strongest American business class — and if your final destination is a US city beyond the gateway, it is often the smartest routing from Britain.

Quick answer

United Polaris is a 1-2-1 business class with direct aisle access on every long-haul seat. The seat has no door but a high shell, and the Saks Fifth Avenue bedding is genuinely among the best in business class. United is a Star Alliance member, so Avios do not work — you need MileagePlus or another Star programme. The real advantage is network: United's US hubs connect onward to more American cities than any competitor. Expect £2,400–£4,000 return from the UK.

About United Airlines

United traces its roots to 1926 and airmail flying, making it one of the oldest airlines in the world. The modern airline is the product of a 2010 merger with Continental, and it operates one of the largest route networks on the planet.

Polaris launched in 2016 as a deliberate reset of United's premium product, which had been widely criticised. The investment covered the seat, the bedding, the dining and a set of dedicated Polaris lounges — a serious attempt to close the gap with European and Asian carriers.

It largely worked. Polaris is now a solid, competitive business class. It is not the best in the world, and United does not pretend otherwise, but the gap between it and BA Club Suite is far narrower than it once was.

United is a founding member of Star Alliance, alongside Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, ANA, Swiss and Air New Zealand.

The Polaris Seat

Polaris is a 1-2-1 layout with every seat having direct aisle access. Seats alternate in orientation to fit the herringbone-derived geometry, which means some face slightly forward and others slightly inward.

The bedding — the standout feature

United made an unusual bet with Polaris: rather than compete on seat hardware, it invested heavily in what you sleep on. The result is the best bedding package in mainstream business class.

You get a Saks Fifth Avenue mattress topper, a duvet, a large pillow and a smaller gel-cooled pillow. On request, crew will provide a second pillow and a slipper set. The gel pillow in particular is the detail frequent flyers mention most — it genuinely helps on an overnight eastbound sector.

Ask for the mattress topper to be laid out before you sleep. It is not automatic on every service and it makes a substantial difference.

Privacy and storage

There is no door. The shell is high enough that you are not directly visible from the aisle when reclined, and centre pairs have a raisable divider, but Polaris sits behind Qsuite, Club Suite and Aria on privacy.

Storage is a side console, a small enclosed compartment and a literature pocket. Adequate but not generous — comparable to Cathay's reverse herringbone, behind Etihad and BA.

The bed

Fully flat at roughly 78 inches, converting electrically. The footwell is enclosed and adequately sized; taller passengers do better in the forward-angled seats than the inward-angled ones, so it is worth checking a seat map.

767-300ERPolaris1-1-1Good — narrow cabin

Good news for UK travellers: the Polaris refit is complete across United's long-haul fleet. Unlike BA, there is no old product lurking — every transatlantic Polaris flight gives you a 1-2-1 flat bed with direct aisle access. The only variable is cabin width, and the 787 is the most pleasant.

Food and Drink

Polaris dining is a multi-course service with a choice of mains, opening with a signature warm nuts service and a drinks round. Presentation is proper china and linen.

The distinctive touch is the ice cream sundae cart — a dessert trolley where you build your own sundae. It sounds gimmicky and passengers consistently rate it as a highlight.

On overnight eastbound flights to the UK, United offers an express meal service — a single-tray option served shortly after takeoff so you can sleep sooner. On a seven-hour overnight this is more valuable than a longer meal, and it is worth requesting when you board.

Catering quality is good rather than exceptional. It sits below Singapore, Qatar and Cathay, roughly level with BA, and ahead of most American carriers historically.

There is no pre-order system and no true dine-on-demand, though the express option gives useful flexibility on overnights.

The Polaris Lounges

United's Polaris lounges are the best business class lounges operated by any US airline and a genuine part of the product's appeal — but note carefully that they are at US hubs, not in the UK.

Polaris lounges at Newark, Chicago O'Hare, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, Houston and Los Angeles offer à la carte dining cooked to order, shower suites, quiet rooms with day beds, and a dedicated bar. They are a substantial step above standard United Clubs.

Crucially, Polaris lounge access requires an international Polaris boarding pass — a domestic first class ticket does not qualify. On a return leg from the US this is a real benefit; the Newark and Chicago lounges are excellent places to spend two hours.

At London Heathrow, United uses Terminal 2 and business passengers access a Star Alliance partner lounge rather than a United facility. It is serviceable but well behind BA's Galleries or Virgin's Clubhouse. This asymmetry — weak in the UK, strong in the US — is worth factoring into which direction matters more to you.

Baggage Allowance

Checked baggage2 bags, 32kg each (piece concept)
Cabin baggage1 cabin bag + 1 personal item
MileagePlus status bonusAdditional allowance by tier
Priority tagsIncluded

Piece concept, matching BA, Virgin and Cathay. Two bags at 32kg is 64kg total, more than the Gulf carriers' 40kg weight allowances.

MileagePlus and Star Alliance

United's programme is MileagePlus, with tiers Silver, Gold, Platinum and 1K. Gold and above deliver Star Alliance Gold recognition.

For UK travellers the key points:

  • Avios do not work. United is Star Alliance; Avios is the oneworld-adjacent currency used by BA and Qatar. You cannot redeem Avios for Polaris.
  • MileagePlus has no award chart — pricing is dynamic, so redemption cost varies by demand. Sometimes excellent, sometimes poor. Always check.
  • Miles do not expire with account activity, which is more generous than KrisFlyer's hard three-year expiry.
  • Star Alliance partners — Lufthansa, Swiss, Singapore, ANA, Air New Zealand — can be booked with MileagePlus miles, often at better value than United's own metal.

If you hold BA or Virgin status, note it delivers nothing on United. Star Alliance status from Lufthansa, Swiss or Singapore does.

Routes from the UK — and the Network Advantage

United serves London Heathrow Terminal 2 heavily, plus Manchester and Edinburgh seasonally, connecting to its US hubs at Newark, Chicago, Washington Dulles, San Francisco, Houston and Los Angeles.

The strategic case for United is not the seat — it is what happens after you land. If your destination is New York or Miami, BA and Virgin fly there nonstop and United has no advantage.

But if you are heading to Denver, Austin, Nashville, Salt Lake City, Portland or dozens of other American cities, United's hub network gets you there on one ticket with baggage checked through and a single point of responsibility if things go wrong. That matters more than fifteen inches of extra seat width.

United also connects onward to Sydney, Auckland and Tokyo via San Francisco and Los Angeles, though for those the Gulf or Asian carriers are usually more comfortable.

Short version: if you are flying UK to a US gateway city and back, BA or Virgin give you a better seat and a far better UK lounge. If you are connecting onward to a secondary American city, United's network usually wins — one ticket, one airline, checked baggage straight through. The bedding is the best of the three regardless.

How to Book United Polaris

Transatlantic pricing follows the standard pattern — cheapest mid-January to early March and late October into early December, peak in July and August and around Christmas.

Book 3 to 6 months ahead. United runs sales less predictably than Virgin but transatlantic business fares do move, particularly on Newark and Chicago routings.

One structural point specific to United: because the value is in the connection, always price the through-fare to your actual final destination rather than to the gateway. A Heathrow to Denver Polaris fare is frequently cheaper than Heathrow to Newark plus a separate domestic ticket, and it protects you if the first leg is delayed.

As a consolidator we hold negotiated United fares, price through to secondary US cities, and can compare a one-ticket United routing against a BA or Virgin nonstop plus domestic add-on so you can see the real difference.

United Polaris Business Class: The Complete UK Guide (2026) — FAQs

Prefer to talk? 0203 727 6360.

Is United Polaris worth it?

Yes, particularly if you are connecting onward within the United States. Every long-haul Polaris seat is 1-2-1 with direct aisle access, the Saks Fifth Avenue bedding is among the best in business class, and United's hub network reaches more American cities on a single ticket than any competitor.

Does United Polaris have a door?

No. The Polaris seat has a high shell and centre pairs have a raisable divider, but there is no sliding door. For a door on a transatlantic route you need BA Club Suite or Virgin's A330neo and A350 suites.

Can I use Avios on United?

No. United is a Star Alliance member and uses MileagePlus miles. Avios, used by British Airways and Qatar Airways, cannot be redeemed for Polaris. Star Alliance miles from Lufthansa, Swiss or Singapore can be.

What is the Polaris lounge and can I use it in London?

Polaris lounges are United's flagship business lounges with a la carte dining, showers and day beds — but they are at US hubs including Newark, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, not in London. At Heathrow Terminal 2 United uses a Star Alliance partner lounge. Access requires an international Polaris boarding pass.

Does United Polaris have a double bed?

No. Centre pairs have a divider that lowers for conversation but the seats do not combine into a flat double. For that you need Qatar Qsuite or Singapore Airlines.

What is the express meal service?

On overnight eastbound flights to the UK, United offers a single-tray express meal served shortly after takeoff so you can sleep sooner. On a seven-hour overnight this is often more valuable than the full service.

How much is United Polaris from the UK?

Typically 2,400 to 4,000 pounds return depending on route and season. Always price through to your final US city rather than the gateway — a through-fare to a secondary city is often cheaper than a gateway fare plus a separate domestic ticket.

Is United Polaris better than BA Club Suite?

On the seat, no — Club Suite has a door, a marginally longer bed and more storage. On bedding, United wins. On the UK ground experience, BA wins clearly. On onward connections within the United States, United wins decisively.
