Updated 7 November 2026
"2 for 1 business class" is one of the most searched phrases in premium travel, and one of the most misunderstood. In the UK it almost always means a credit card companion voucher, not a cash fare where the second seat is free. This guide explains how the British Airways and Virgin Atlantic vouchers really work in 2026, what you still pay, the catches, and when simply buying two business class seats works out better.
Quick answer
Genuine 2-for-1 business class deals in the UK come from airline credit card companion vouchers. The British Airways American Express Premium Plus card (£300 a year) gives a voucher after £15,000 of spend in a card year: two reward seats for the Avios of one, in any cabin, valid for two years. Virgin Atlantic's Reward+ card gives a voucher after £10,000 of spend. In both cases you need the points for one seat, a reward seat must be available, and you pay taxes and charges on both tickets, often around £1,000 per person on long-haul business class. Two-for-one cash fares are rare and short-lived.

Key takeaways
- The voucher halves the points, not the taxes. Each passenger still pays full taxes and carrier charges.
- Of the two BA cards, only the Premium Plus voucher works in business and first class; the free BA Amex voucher is economy only. Virgin Atlantic's voucher works in every cabin.
- Availability is the real limit. Reward seats in business class on peak dates go quickly, often as soon as they are released.
- Run the numbers. On many routes two business class seats bought on a private fare cost less in real money than the card spend, fees and taxes a voucher needs.
What "2 for 1 Business Class" Actually Means
| Type | How it works | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card companion voucher | Earn a voucher by card spend; book two reward seats for the points of one | The main genuine 2-for-1 in the UK |
| Airline companion sale | An airline discounts the second business class seat when two travel together | Occasional, short, limited routes and dates |
| “2 for 1” advertising | A package or agent headline price | Check the base price: the saving can be built into an inflated fare |
The British Airways Companion Voucher
The British Airways American Express Premium Plus card costs £300 a year. Spend £15,000 in a card year and you receive a Companion Voucher in your British Airways Club account, valid for 24 months. When you book a reward flight with Avios, the voucher lets a companion travel in the same cabin on the same flight for no extra Avios.

| Cabins | Any cabin, including Club (business) and First |

From British Airways' Companion Voucher terms (vouchers earned since 1 September 2021) and American Express, checked 7 November 2026. The free BA Amex card's voucher is valid for 12 months and for economy only.
A worked example: a return business class reward trip for two from London to Cape Town can cost up to 400,000 Avios at peak; with the voucher it is half that, plus taxes and charges for both of you (Reward Flight Finder, October 2026). See our British Airways business class guide for the Club Suite seat.
The Virgin Atlantic Voucher
Virgin Atlantic's Reward+ Mastercard (£160 a year) gives a voucher after £10,000 of annual spend; the free Reward card needs £20,000. The voucher is valid for two years, works in every cabin including Upper Class, and can be used for a companion seat on the same flight when you hold a ticket, or to upgrade yourself. It cannot be used to book a reward flight for one person on its own.
A worked example: a return Upper Class reward seat to New York for February 2027 cost 129,000 Virgin Points plus £1,117 in taxes and charges. Using a voucher with an economy reward and an upgrade cut the points to 54,000, but the £1,117 stayed the same (Head for Points, 19 October 2026). See our Virgin Atlantic Upper Class guide.
The Catches
- Taxes and charges on both tickets. On long-haul business class these are often around £1,000 per person return.
- You still need the points for the first seat: often 100,000 to 200,000 or more for long-haul business class at peak.
- Reward seats are limited, especially in school holidays and at Christmas, and you must find two on the same flight.
- The card spend is real money. £10,000 to £15,000 a year only makes sense if you would spend it anyway, and paid off in full.
- One airline group only. A BA voucher will not help you fly Qatar Airways, Emirates or Singapore Airlines.
When Buying Two Seats Works Out Better
If you do not have the points, the dates are fixed, or you want an airline outside the BA and Virgin groups, two seats on a private fare are often the simpler and cheaper route. Here is what two business class seats currently cost from the UK on our fares:
| Route from the UK | Business class, per person | Two travelling together |
|---|---|---|
| New York | £2,596 | £5,192 |
| Dubai | £2,543 | £5,086 |
| Cape Town | £2,389 | £4,778 |
| Bangkok | £2,398 | £4,796 |
| Sydney | £3,998 | £7,996 |

Two-for-one cash fares do appear: Qatar Airways, for example, has run business class companion sales on selected routes. They are short, limited to set dates, and usually announced at short notice. If you are flexible, tell us which routes you are watching and we will compare any sale against our private fares.

2 for 1 Business Class Flights: How Companion Vouchers Really Work — FAQs
Prefer to talk? 0203 727 6360.
Are there real 2 for 1 business class flights?
Yes, but mostly through credit card companion vouchers rather than cash fares. The British Airways Premium Plus Amex and the Virgin Atlantic Reward cards give vouchers that let two people fly in business class for the points of one. You still pay taxes and charges for both travellers, and a reward seat must be available.
How do I get a British Airways 2 for 1 voucher?
Hold the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card, which costs £300 a year, and spend £15,000 on it in a card year. The Companion Voucher appears in your British Airways Club account and is valid for 24 months, in any cabin, on British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus reward flights.
Can I use the BA companion voucher in business class?
Only the Premium Plus card's voucher. It works in any cabin, including Club business class and First. The free British Airways Amex card's voucher is for economy only. In both cases the cardholder must travel and pays taxes, fees and charges for every passenger on an American Express card.
Do you pay taxes on a 2 for 1 companion ticket?
Yes. A companion voucher halves the points, not the taxes and carrier charges. On long-haul business class these are often around £1,000 per person return. One October 2026 example for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class to New York showed £1,117 in taxes and charges on a return reward booking.
How does the Virgin Atlantic companion voucher work?
Spend £10,000 a year on the Reward+ Mastercard, which costs £160, or £20,000 on the free Reward card. The voucher is valid for two years in every cabin. Use it for a companion seat on the same flight when you hold a ticket, or to upgrade your own booking.
Is a 2 for 1 voucher cheaper than buying two business class tickets?
It depends on whether you already have the points and can find two reward seats. If you need to buy points or spend heavily to earn the voucher, two seats on a private fare can cost less in real money. Two people currently fly business class to New York from £5,192 return on our fares.
Do airlines ever sell 2 for 1 business class fares?
Occasionally. Qatar Airways, for example, has run business class companion sales where the second traveller pays less. These sales are short, limited to selected routes and travel dates, and usually announced at short notice, so they are hard to plan a fixed trip around.
Can a travel agent book a companion voucher flight?
No. British Airways companion vouchers must be applied through British Airways Club channels, and Virgin Atlantic vouchers through Flying Club. A specialist can, however, price two business class seats on private fares for the same dates, so you can compare the real cost before you use your points.
