Updated 26 October 2026
Almost every business class journey from the UK to Australia stops somewhere. The question is whether you change planes in two hours or stay two nights, and which city you break the trip in. This guide compares the seven hubs that work for the UK–Australia route, how each one splits the flying, what the airlines offer for a stopover, and how the current Middle East disruption affects the choice this winter.
Quick answer
Singapore is the best all-round stopover between the UK and Australia: it splits the journey into roughly 13 and 8 hours, is easy for UK passport holders to enter, and is served by Singapore Airlines, Qantas and British Airways. Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific) is the strongest alternative. Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer the best stopover hotel deals and often the lowest business class fares, but put the long 14-hour sector after the stop. In winter 2026–27, Asian routings also avoid Middle East airspace altogether.

Key takeaways
- Asian hubs split the trip long-then-short (about 13h + 8h); Gulf hubs split it short-then-long (about 7h + 14h).
- A two-night stopover in Asia moves your body clock seven or eight hours towards Australian time before you land.
- Gulf carriers have the most generous stopover deals: Qatar Airways hotel packages from US$14 per person per night, and Emirates Dubai Connect hotels on eligible 6–26 hour connections.
- Qantas's Perth flight is not non-stop outbound until 31 January 2027: it currently routes via Singapore. The return from London to Perth stays non-stop.
- A stopover rarely costs much extra on a business class ticket when it is built into the same booking, but fare rules vary, so ask when you get a quote.
The Seven Stopover Hubs Compared
Flying times below are typical sector times for Heathrow to the hub and the hub to Sydney. Perth is two to three hours closer from every hub; Brisbane and Melbourne are within an hour of Sydney.
| Hub | Business class airline(s) from the UK | Flying split (UK + Sydney) | Stopover on one ticket? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore | Singapore Airlines, Qantas, British Airways | about 13h + 8h | Yes — the classic choice |
| Hong Kong | Cathay Pacific | about 13h + 9h | Yes |
| Doha | Qatar Airways | about 7h + 14h | Yes |
| Dubai | Emirates | about 7h + 14h | Yes |
| Abu Dhabi | Etihad | about 7h + 14h | Yes |
| Kuala Lumpur | Malaysia Airlines | about 13h + 8h | Yes |
| Bangkok | Thai Airways | about 12h + 9h | Yes |
Approximate sector times, checked 26 October 2026. Gulf flights can run longer while airlines route around restricted airspace. Whether a stopover is permitted, and at what cost, depends on the fare.
Asia or the Gulf? How the Split Changes the Trip
The biggest difference between hubs is not the city but where it sits on the map. Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok are roughly two-thirds of the way to Australia. Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are about a third of the way.
Via Asia: long first flight, short second
You fly 12 to 13 hours overnight from London, which is long enough for a full night's sleep in a flat bed. After a stopover, the final leg to Australia is a manageable 7 to 9 hours. Because Singapore and Hong Kong are seven or eight hours ahead of the UK, two nights there shifts your body clock most of the way to Australian time, which makes the arrival noticeably easier.
Via the Gulf: short first flight, long second
A 7-hour hop gets you to Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi, then the 14-hour sector to Australia does the heavy lifting. Without a stopover this is often the fastest and cheapest way to go, and it connects well from regional UK airports. With a stopover, you still face the longest flight of the trip at the end. Gulf carriers often have the lowest business class fares to Australia, and Qatar Airways' Qsuite is one of the best seats on the route (see our Qsuite review).
The Middle East situation this winter
Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi airports are open and Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad are flying to the UK and Australia, but the region's airspace restrictions have caused schedule changes and cancellations through 2026. Qantas, for example, has routed its Perth–London flight via Singapore to avoid Middle East airspace, and has confirmed this will continue until 31 January 2027. If you would rather avoid the region entirely, an Asian hub does that. If a Gulf fare suits you better, we will check the latest operating status for your dates before you book, and every ticket we sell is ATOL protected (10713).
Each Hub in Detail
1. Singapore: the best all-round stopover
Singapore Airlines flies from Heathrow and Manchester, with onward flights to every major Australian city; Qantas and British Airways also fly London–Singapore–Sydney. Changi is one of the most pleasant airports in the world to change planes, and the city is compact enough for a rewarding one- or two-night stay. UK passport holders can visit without a visa but must complete the free SG Arrival Card online within three days before arrival. Singapore Airlines sells stopover hotel packages; ask us to price one alongside your flights. See our guide to business class flights to Singapore.
2. Hong Kong: the best alternative to Singapore
Cathay Pacific flies Heathrow to Hong Kong and on to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, among others. The journey splits much like Singapore's, and UK passport holders can stay visa-free. Cathay regularly runs Hong Kong stopover promotions, and its newest long-haul business class seat, the Aria Suite, has a closing door (see our Cathay Pacific guide).
3. Doha: the best-value stopover hotels
Qatar Airways' stopover hotel packages are the cheapest on the route: from US$14 per person per night for a four-star hotel, from US$24 for five-star and from US$83 for a luxury hotel with breakfast, sharing a double room. You can stop for up to four nights, once in each direction, provided your transit is at least 12 hours, and the hotel must be booked with the flights. UK passport holders can currently enter Qatar visa-free, but check the Visit Qatar site before you travel. Compare the airlines in our Qatar vs Emirates vs Singapore guide.
4. Dubai: the most to do, and a free hotel on long connections
Emirates flies to Dubai from more UK airports than any other airline, then on to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. If your connection is between 6 and 26 hours and it is the shortest available, Emirates' Dubai Connect programme can provide a hotel and meals, subject to minimum fares and Emirates' approval; UAE entry is your responsibility. For a longer stay, Emirates Holidays and we can price hotels in the city. See Emirates vs Qatar to Australia.
5. Abu Dhabi: Etihad's suites and free-night offers
Etihad flies Heathrow to Abu Dhabi and on to Sydney and Melbourne, with Business Suites with sliding doors on its A350s to Sydney. Etihad has offered up to two free hotel nights for eligible stopovers on round-trip tickets it issues; the terms change and blackout dates apply, so we confirm the current offer at the time of quoting.
6. Kuala Lumpur: the value pick in Asia
Malaysia Airlines flies Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur on the A350 and on to Australia, often at lower business class fares than Singapore Airlines. The city is less polished for a short stay than Singapore, but excellent value for hotels and food, and UK passport holders can visit visa-free (complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card first). See our Malaysia Airlines business class guide.
7. Bangkok: the stopover that becomes a holiday
Thai Airways flies Heathrow to Bangkok and on to Australia. Bangkok works best as a longer break of three nights or more, or as a gateway to the Thai islands. Thailand's visa-exempt stay for UK visitors has been under review, and arrivals must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, so check the current rules before you travel. See business class flights to Bangkok.
What About Flying Non-Stop to Perth?
Qantas's London–Perth service on the Boeing 787 is the only scheduled non-stop between the UK and Australia, but between 25 October 2026 and 31 January 2027 the Perth-to-London direction runs via Singapore as QF209. The London-to-Perth direction stays non-stop. Non-stop flying is scheduled to resume in both directions from 1 February 2027. If you want the shortest possible journey to Western Australia, London–Perth is still the route to book; if you want a stopover anyway, Singapore now sits naturally on the way home. See our Qantas business class guide and business class flights to Perth.
How Long Should the Stopover Be?
| Length | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6 hours | Getting there fastest; lounge, shower, back on board | No real recovery from the first flight |
| Overnight (12–24 hours) | A proper bed between two long flights, with little time lost | Early check-out or late departure times |
| Two nights | Jet lag: your body clock moves most of the way to Australian time | Hotel and city costs; check the fare allows it |
| Three nights or more | Turning the stop into a holiday (Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong) | Some stopover deals cap the number of nights |

Before You Book: Four Practical Checks
- Keep it on one ticket. A stopover built into one booking protects your onward flight if the first one is late. Two separate tickets do not.
- Check entry rules for the hub and for Australia. UK passport holders need an Australian ETA before departure. Check the FCDO travel advice for each country you stop in.
- Check baggage. On one ticket your bags can usually be checked through to Australia, or collected at the stopover if you are staying; ask which applies.
- Check the fare rules. Ask whether the stopover is included, how many nights are allowed, and what a change would cost.

Singapore is the best all-round stopover: it splits the journey into about 13 and 8 hours, is easy for UK passport holders to enter, and is served by Singapore Airlines, Qantas and British Airways. Hong Kong is the closest alternative. Doha and Dubai offer cheaper stopover hotels but leave the 14-hour flight until after the stop.
Is it better to stop in Dubai or Singapore on the way to Australia?
Singapore suits travellers who want to break the trip near the end, since only about 8 hours remain to Sydney, and two nights there helps with jet lag. Dubai has more UK departure airports and more to do, and Emirates' fares are often lower, but the 14-hour flight to Australia comes after the stop.
How long should a stopover on the way to Australia be?
One overnight stop of 12 to 24 hours gives you a proper bed between two long flights. Two nights is the sweet spot for jet lag, especially in Singapore or Hong Kong, because your body clock moves most of the way to Australian time. Three nights or more turns the stop into a short holiday.
Does a stopover cost extra on a business class ticket to Australia?
Often very little or nothing when it is built into the same ticket, but it depends on the fare. Some cheaper fares do not allow a stopover or charge for it. Our lowest business class fares to Sydney currently start from £3,998 return; tell us you want a stopover when you request a quote.
