Christmas is the hardest week of the year to fly business class to Australia. It is the Australian summer, the UK school holidays and the busiest time for visiting family, all at once, and the premium cabins on the peak dates were filling from the summer onwards. If you are reading this in late October, you have not missed it — but the approach that works now is different from the one that works in May.

Quick answer

You can still fly business class to Australia for Christmas 2026, but the cheapest seats on the peak dates have gone. Business class to Australia starts from £3,883 return on our private fares in the low season; Christmas dates price above that. What moves the fare most now is flexibility: flying a few days earlier or on Christmas Eve or Day, landing in a less pressured city than Sydney, coming home after the first week of January, and choosing the hub with seats left rather than the airline you would normally pick.

Key takeaways

  • The tightest outbound days are typically the weekend before schools break up through about 22 December. The tightest returns are the first week of January.
  • Allow two calendar days. Sydney is 11 hours ahead of the UK in December, so a flight leaving on 22 December lands on the 24th.
  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day departures are usually quieter and better value than the days just before them.
  • New Year's Eve in Sydney is the single hardest arrival in the calendar; flights landing on 30–31 December go first.
  • More seats this year: Qantas upgauges extra Singapore–Sydney flights to the A380 from 7 December 2026, adding business and first class capacity right in the peak.

Christmas 2026: What Is Still Bookable

By late October, the pattern on this route is predictable. The lowest business fare buckets on the busiest dates sold first, the Sydney arrivals around New Year are close to full, and the airlines that remain have higher fares but seats. The trip is still possible; what changes is that the itinerary has to flex around availability rather than the other way round.

Below are the low-season "from" fares on our private fares, as a reference point. Expect Christmas dates to sit above these, by an amount that depends entirely on the exact days and city.

City Business from (low season) Christmas note
Sydney £3,998 Hardest at New Year; consider landing by 27 December
Melbourne £4,097 Good alternative to Sydney; Boxing Day Test in late December
Brisbane £4,084 Often more availability than Sydney at Christmas
Perth £3,998 Qantas non-stop from Heathrow; quickest door to door
Adelaide £3,883 Fewer airlines, so fewer seats; book soonest

Seven Ways to Get Business Class to Australia This Christmas

1. Move the outbound by a few days

The pressure falls on the days around the end of the UK school term. Flying a week earlier, or flying on 24 or 25 December itself, opens up seats and fares that the 19th to 22nd no longer have. Christmas Day in the air is quieter than you would expect, crews mark it, and you land with the Australian Boxing Day ahead of you.

2. Come home after the first week of January

The return is often the harder half. Early January is when every family heads home before school, so a return around mid-January is usually easier to find in business and kinder on the fare.

3. Land somewhere other than Sydney

Sydney carries the most demand, especially around New Year. Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth frequently have business seats when Sydney does not, and a short domestic flight on the same ticket gets you to Sydney anyway. In the low season these cities price within a few hundred pounds of each other, so the routing that has availability is the one to take.

4. Choose the hub with seats, not the airline you usually fly

Qatar via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi and Singapore Airlines and Qantas via Singapore all compete for this traffic, and at Christmas their availability diverges sharply. This is where a specialist earns their keep: we check every carrier on your dates, not just the one with the familiar name. The extra Qantas A380 flying between Singapore and Sydney from 7 December adds premium seats at exactly this time.

5. Use an open-jaw

Flying into one city and home from another (into Brisbane, home from Sydney, for example) lets you take the outbound and return that each have seats, rather than needing both on one city pair. It usually costs about the same as a return and saves a domestic flight back.

6. Put the flat bed where it matters

If a full business itinerary is out of reach, business on the long overnight sector into Australia, with the shorter sector in premium economy, keeps the part of the journey where sleep matters most. Ask us to price both; mixed-cabin fares are sometimes the only way to keep a flat bed on peak dates.

7. Fly from your local airport

Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle connect through the Gulf hubs, and at Christmas a regional through-fare sometimes has business seats that the London departures have already sold. It also spares you the M25 on the busiest travel week of the year.

Timing the Journey Around Christmas Day

The time difference catches people out at Christmas more than at any other time of year. In December, Sydney and Melbourne are 11 hours ahead of the UK, Adelaide 10½, Brisbane 10 and Perth 8. Add a journey of around 22 to 24 hours and you need to leave two calendar days before you want to arrive.

To be in Sydney for… Leave the UK by
Christmas Eve 22 December
Christmas Day lunch 23 December
Boxing Day 24 December (or fly on Christmas Day and land on the 26th)
New Year's Eve fireworks 28–29 December, to allow for delays

Typical one-stop journey times; exact arrival depends on the airline and connection.

Christmas in Australia: What to Expect

It is summer: long days, beach weather in Sydney and Perth, and the start of the cricket season, with the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Christmas is often a lunch outdoors rather than a dinner indoors, New Year's Eve in Sydney is one of the most watched fireworks displays in the world, and the period from Christmas to the end of January is Australia's own main holiday season, so domestic flights and hotels are busy too. If you are adding New Zealand, the same pressure applies: see business class to New Zealand.

Planning Christmas 2027 Instead?

If this year's dates do not work, next year's will be easier. Book Christmas business class to Australia five to seven months out — around May to July for a December trip — when the full range of fares and airlines is still open. Our guide to the best time to book business class to Australia covers the whole year, and Qantas' Project Sunrise non-stop from Sydney to London is due to begin in 2027, which will add a new option for Christmas 2027 and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late to book business class to Australia for Christmas?

Not usually, but the cheapest seats on the peak dates have gone by October. Flexibility now matters more than timing: flying a few days earlier or on Christmas Eve or Day, landing in Brisbane, Melbourne or Perth instead of Sydney, and returning after the first week of January all open up business class seats.

How much is business class to Australia at Christmas?

More than the low-season price, which starts from £3,883 return on our private fares. Christmas fares depend entirely on the exact dates and city, and they change daily, so we quote them live. Flying on 24 or 25 December, or returning mid-January, is usually the biggest single saving.

When should I leave the UK to be in Australia for Christmas Day?

Leave by 23 December to be in Sydney for Christmas Day lunch. Sydney is 11 hours ahead of the UK in December and the journey takes around 22 to 24 hours with one stop, so you lose two calendar days. To arrive for Christmas Eve, leave on 22 December.

What are the busiest dates to fly to Australia at Christmas?

Outbound, the busiest days are typically from the weekend the UK schools break up through about 22 December. Inbound, the first week of January is the tightest as families return for school. Flights landing in Sydney on 30 and 31 December for New Year's Eve are the hardest of all to get.

Is it cheaper to fly to Australia on Christmas Day?

Often, yes. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day departures are usually quieter and better value than the days just before them, because most travellers want to arrive in time for Christmas rather than spend it flying. You land in Australia for Boxing Day with the summer ahead of you.

Which airline has the most business class seats to Australia at Christmas?

It changes by date, which is why we check every carrier. Qatar, Emirates, Etihad, Singapore Airlines and Qantas all fly this route, and at Christmas their availability diverges sharply. This year Qantas also adds extra A380 flights between Singapore and Sydney from 7 December, increasing premium capacity in the peak.

Can I fly to Australia for New Year's Eve in business class?

Yes, but book as early as possible and aim to land by 28 or 29 December to allow for delays. Flights arriving in Sydney on 30 and 31 December sell out first. Landing in Melbourne or Brisbane and flying on to Sydney is often the only way to find business seats close to the date.

When should I book Christmas 2027 flights to Australia?

Five to seven months ahead, so around May to July 2027 for a December trip, when every airline and fare type is still open. Qantas' Project Sunrise non-stop between Sydney and London is due to begin in 2027, adding another option for that Christmas.
