Last week a customer asked us to price business class to Melbourne for late February. We sent back three options in one email: Etihad at £4,798, Qatar with Virgin Australia at £4,198, and China Southern at £3,698. Same trip, same cabin, £1,100 between the top fare and the bottom one.
The cheap one looked like the obvious pick, until we added up the hours. Below is exactly what each fare includes, where the time goes, and how we'd decide between them if it were our own money.

The three fares, side by side
One traveller, business class, flying out in late February 2027 and home in late March. This is what we quoted.
| Option | Fare (return) | Route | Flights | Total travel time | Baggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · Etihad | £4,798 | Heathrow → Abu Dhabi → Melbourne, same way back | 4 | 44h 25m 21h 05m out · 23h 20m back |
35kg |
| B · Qatar Airways + Virgin Australia | £4,198 | Manchester → Doha → Sydney → Melbourne; home via Perth and Doha | 6 | 53h 30m 26h 05m out · 27h 25m back |
40kg |
| C · China Southern | £3,698 | Gatwick → Guangzhou → Melbourne, same way back | 4 | 78h 45m 24h 40m out · 54h 05m back |
2 checked bags |
Look at the travel times rather than the prices. The cheapest fare isn't slow because the flying takes longer. It's slow because of one long stop on the way home, which we'll get to.
Etihad, £4,798: the simplest trip
Fastest of the three · 44h 25m total
Heathrow to Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi to Melbourne, and the same two flights in reverse coming home. One airline throughout and a flat bed on every sector. It's the most expensive of the three, and the quickest by some distance: nine hours faster than option B and 34 hours faster than option C.
The one thing to know is the outbound connection. You get 55 minutes in Abu Dhabi between landing and your Melbourne departure. It's tight, but both flights are on the same ticket, so if the Heathrow flight runs late Etihad has to rebook you. If you'd rather not dash through the terminal, ask us and we'll price a later connection.
More on the seat and the lounges in our Etihad business class guide.
Qatar Airways + Virgin Australia, £4,198: six flights
£600 less than Etihad · 40kg baggage · from Manchester
The middle option suits northern travellers well. It leaves from Manchester, so there's no train down to Heathrow, it carries the biggest baggage allowance of the three, and it's £600 cheaper than Etihad. The catch is the routing:
- Going out: Manchester to Doha, Doha to Sydney, then a Virgin Australia flight on to Melbourne.
- Coming home: Melbourne to Perth with Virgin Australia, then Perth to Doha and Doha to Manchester with Qatar.
Six flights rather than four, and about 53½ hours in total. The long-haul Qatar flights are the airline's flat-bed business cabin, covered in our Qatar Airways guide. The two flights inside Australia are worth checking before you book. Sydney–Melbourne and Melbourne–Perth are flown on domestic aircraft, where business class is often a wide recliner rather than a fully flat bed.
Nine extra hours and two extra take-offs, in return for £600 and an extra 5kg of luggage.
China Southern, £3,698: the catch is on the way home
Cheapest by £1,100 · 31½-hour Guangzhou stop
On paper, this is the one to book. Four flights, a 1-2-1 cabin so every seat has its own aisle access, lounge access and two checked bags, for £1,100 less than Etihad. The outbound is quick too: Gatwick to Guangzhou, a three-hour connection, and straight on to Melbourne in 24h 40m.
Coming home is different. You land in Guangzhou at 18:00 on Tuesday 23 March, and your London flight leaves at 01:30 on Thursday 25 March. That's 31½ hours on the ground: a full day and two nights. It's why the return alone takes 54 hours.
Whether that's a problem depends on you. Some travellers would happily take a free day in Guangzhou for the food alone. Others just want to get home. Either way, plan for two things:
- A hotel. It isn't included in the fare. Airport hotels are good value; the city centre is roughly 45 minutes away each way.
- Permission to leave the airport. At the time of writing, UK passport holders can visit China visa-free for short stays, and China's 240-hour visa-free transit scheme also covers Guangzhou. These rules change, so check them for your own passport before you book.
Is £1,100 worth 34 hours?
China Southern saves you £1,100 against Etihad and adds 34 hours and 20 minutes of travel. Divide one by the other and you're effectively being paid about £32 for every extra hour.
For a retired couple with time to spare, that's £64 an hour between them to see a new city. For someone flying out for a wedding and due back at work on the Monday, it's a poor trade. Both are sensible choices. What matters is knowing the number before you book.
Which one should you book?
| Book | If you… | Bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Etihad, £4,798 | want the shortest journey, one airline and a flat bed on every flight | It costs the most, and the Abu Dhabi connection is 55 minutes |
| Qatar + Virgin Australia, £4,198 | live nearer Manchester, travel heavy and want to save £600 | Six flights, and the two domestic seats may not be fully flat |
| China Southern, £3,698 | are flexible, curious and happy to spend a day in Guangzhou | Sort your own hotel and check China's entry rules; 78h 45m in total |
How we worked out the travel times
Each total runs from the scheduled departure of your first flight to the scheduled arrival of your last, with every connection included, after converting the local times. It doesn't include getting to the airport or queueing at passport control. Etihad's 44h 25m, for example, is 21h 05m outbound plus 23h 20m home.
One small difference: the Etihad option left on 23 February, a day after the other two. That's normal when fares are built around seat availability, and it's another reason the only price worth relying on is the one quoted for your own dates.
